GILROY – City police are looking for a man who allegedly kidnapped and raped a 22-year-old woman on Nov. 6.
The woman, who does not live in Gilroy, told police she was walking downtown on Monterey Street between Sixth and Seventh streets at about 10 p.m. that Thursday when the suspect stopped his red, two-door car and offered her a ride. Although she did not know him, she accepted the offer and got in his car.
The man then restrained the woman with force, drove to a secluded area in southern Gilroy and raped her in the car, she told police.
He released her shortly before midnight in downtown Gilroy.
The woman reported the incident to police the next day and was treated for injuries that day at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose.
She described the suspect as Hispanic, in his 20s, about 5 feet 7 inches tall with a stocky or muscular build. He had short hair and a thin mustache, was well groomed and wore a white dress shirt without a collar, jeans and cowboy boots. He spoke both English and Spanish, she reported.
After investigating the case for 11 days, city police decided Tuesday to share it with the public and ask for help in finding the perpetrator. Police said they were waiting for a sketch of the suspect – not finished until this week – before releasing the information.
Gilroy Police Detective Wes Stanford said he doesn’t know the suspect’s name or whereabouts but thinks he might live in the area.
Police invite anyone with information about the suspect’s possible identity to call them at 846-0350 or Detective Wes Stanford at 846-0332. Callers may remain anonymous and should reference case number 03-6745 when calling.
