Morgan Hill police will conduct a DUI and drivers license checkpoint Friday, July 19 at an undisclosed location inside the city limits.
The checkpoint will take place from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m., according to Morgan Hill Police Officer Demetrick Caballero. Checkpoints are typically placed in locations that have the best opportunity to achieve drunk and drugged driving deterrence, and provide the best safety for officers and the public.
Officers will randomly contact drivers passing through the checkpoint, as they look for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment, police said. Drivers suspected of driving impaired are subject to being arrested, having their license suspended and could be sentenced to probation, and could be required to pay fines and fees, take DUI classes, and pay other expenses that can exceed $10,000.
The DUI/drivers license checkpoint is an effort by the police department to reduce impaired driving-related fatalities and injuries, police said.
Officers will also be checking drivers for proper licensing at the checkpoint, police said.
Funding for the effort is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
