Gilroy's Kevin Acosta kicks a field goal for the Mustangs during their game Friday against Gonzales.

It was all about Gilroy’s Brandon Boyd Friday — but he didn’t want it to be.
The senior running back broke and surpassed the 1000-yard rushing mark but maintained a modest demeanor following the Mustangs’ 70-0 blanking of Gonzales at home. Boyd racked up 304 yards on just 10 carries and scored five touchdowns to bring his season total to 1,204 yards in four games.
“The credit is all due to the line and the wide receivers’ blocks,” Boyd said. “I don’t want it to be the Brandon Boyd show. I want to give all the credit to the linemen — that’s all I want.”
Boyd, who had 1,200 yards in his breakout sophomore year, further secured his spot as the Monterey Bay League and Central Coast Section leading rusher. Watching all these achievements accumulate is Boyd’s father and head coach of the Mustangs (2-2), Brian Boyd.
“We knew this was going to come, we didn’t know it was going to come this fast,” Brian Boyd said. “I’m pretty proud of him. When I’m over here and I’m out on the football field, I’m his coach. But right now, when I’m his dad, I’m pretty proud of him. …It’s pretty special, we think he has a chance of doing something really special this year.”
Gilroy jumped out to a quick 22-0 lead in the first quarter. David Munoz hit Riley Filice-Hollar for an 18-yard touchdown less than a minute into the quarter. The next two scores were Brandon Boyd rushes — 65-yard and 15-yard touchdown runs.
The Gilroy defense was stellar once again, holding the Gonzales to just 64 yards of total offense. The Spartans were also plagued by turnovers, racking up seven in the game. Gonzales had four fumbles and three interceptions in the game, one of which was a pick-6 by Bubba Lara in the fourth quarter, which put the Mustangs ahead 63-0 at that point.
“I’ve been on the other side of that — it’s not a good feeling for them,” coach Brian Boyd said. “Our goal wasn’t to run it up on them. We were just going to stick to our goal which was to give them zero. We played everyone tonight, we did everything we could to let other kids play and not score on them but the breaks just went our way.”
The Mustangs have the momentum they were looking for heading into league play, which kicks off at 7:30 p.m. against Watsonville at home.
Gilroy is hoping to maintain stellar performances on both sides of the ball despite not knowing much about its opponent.
“We haven’t really seen Watsonville on film, but this week we’ll get them,” Brandon Boyd said. “Our defense is playing outstanding; we got the shutout tonight again. That’s all that we need. We need blocking and defense, that’s all we need.”
I don’t want it to be the Brandon Boyd show. I want to give all the credit to the linemen — that’s all I want.”
