With Monday’s match against Alisal tied at 3-all, the Cougars’ fate rested on the shoulders of No. 4 singles players Jesus Velasquez.
Alisal had beaten Christopher 4-3 in the first meeting of the season and the Cougars didn’t want to close out their season finale in the same fashion. No. 4 Velasquez had dropped the first set to his Trojans’ opponent, Jose Negrete, 2-6 and Christopher feared history was about to repeat itself.
Then Velasquez changed his approach.
The Cougar rebounded to win the second set 6-4 to force a tiebreaker, which he won 10-5. The victory gave Christopher the 4-3 win for its home finale.
“The players were probably feeling the pressure as both teams were at the fence cheering on their teammates,” Cougar coach Patrick McBrearty said. “The score was 9-5 in favor of CHS when Jesus hit a cross court winner to take the day!”
The remaining No. 1 and 3 singles players, along with No. 1 doubles, made quick work of the Trojans to up CHS up 3-0 early.
No.1 Destin Cockcroft had the toughest match of the three, but pulled out a 7-6, 6-1 win over Jacob Garcia. The No. 3, Dominic Nguyen, topped Alisal’s Abraham Lozano 6-1, 6-1.
The No. 1 doubles team of Isaiah Rugerio and Tom Madruga breezed by Alisal’s Rexon Alejano and Isaias Corona 6-0, 6-3.
But not all the Cougars had such an easy time with Alisal.
No. 2 singles Geoffrey He was handed a 6-3, 6-3 loss by Alisal’s Adrian Serrato.
The No. 2 team of Sam Fernandez and Ernesto Jimenez were beaten 6-3, 6-0 by their Alisal counterparts—Fabian Escamilla and Ryan Sugabo. The No. 3 team, Alfredo Barberena and Michael Davalos, had the same fate as they were beaten by Alisal’s Luis Lozano and Jesus Ceta 6-3, 6-3.
