Gilroy Mustangs

The Gilroy girls basketball team took sole possession of the Monterey Bay Pacific League Monday.
The Mustangs beat Everett Alvarez 52-48, improving to 15-8 overall and 10-1 in league play.
Maddy Cox led Gilroy with 12 points, followed by Nia Pollard with 11. Holly Lam and Brianna Barron both posted eight.
The Mustangs found themselves in foul trouble early and had to make adjustments, but was able to finish off strong. Sam Delatorre was key to the game’s finish, getting the points when the team needed it — including a 3-pointer that helped sustain its lead.
“Overall (it) was a very tough game,” Mustangs coach Mitchell Pierce said via text.
Gilroy has a chance to be crowned league champions, pending a Alisal loss and/or a win at North Monterey County at 7 p.m. Thursday for the regular season finale. 
GIRLS SOCCER
Mustangs top Pajaro Valley
Gilroy’s two second half goals were enough to lift them to a 3-2 victory over Pajaro Valley Friday.

The Mustangs (6-9-1, 5-4-1) have just two games left in the regular season. They will play at Christopher at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday and host Alisal at 5:45 p.m. Friday. 
Cougars tie with Salinas
Christopher just couldn’t find a way to edge Salinas. Fortunately for the Cougars, the hosts couldn’t beat them either.
The Cougars (14-3-2 overall, 6-3-2 in league) tied 1-1 at Salinas Friday.

Christopher will play its home and regular season finale at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday against Gilroy at home.
BOYS BASKETBALL
CHS falls to Monterey
Christopher had three players in double digits, but it wasn’t enough to get past Monterey.
The Cougars lost their 10th straight, a 63-54 decision at Monterey Friday.
Chad Hartman led the team with 17 points, followed by Evan Shapiro with 11 and Zander Bowers with 10. 
Christopher (8-14, 1-9) outscored the host in the third 15-12, but couldn’t erase the nine point deficit it found itself in at halftime.
Hawks improve to 21-2

The roar of the crowd on Senior Night helped boost the energy of the ever-improving Oakwood Hawks basketball team.
 
The Hawks topped York 84-24 Wednesday to improve to 21-2 on the season and 9-0 in league. 

 
Oakwood played flawlessly on both sides of the ball, taking a commanding 57-14 lead into halftime.
 
Nate Schilling nailed seven of his eight 3-point attempts, finishing the game with 25 points, six assists and four steals. Standout freshman Youssef Eshra was right behind him with 24 points, six assists and two steals. 
 
Justin Mortenson led the defense with five blocked shots. 
 
Coach Kort Jensen said “this young Hawk team is one of the best high school defensive teams” he’s seen 30-plus years of coaching. 
 
York entered the game averaging nearly 50 points per game.
 
Oakwood’s five starters are averaging 10-plus points a game. Here’s a look at the Hawks’ starters:
Eshra — 20.7 points, 8.3 assists, 5.4 steals.
Zac Jenkins — 16.3 points, 9 rebounds, 1.9 steals.
Nate Schilling — 16.2 points, 5.3 assists, 3.4 rebounds.
Justin Mortenson — 14 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.1 blocks.
Jonathan Angulo — 11.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.3 steals.

Miles Batey — 7.1 points, 4.9 rebounds.
Evan Richards — 4.7 points, 4.5 rebounds.
 
The Hawks will host Anzar at 5 p.m. tonight.
