The Gilroy girls basketball team took sole possession of the Monterey Bay Pacific League Monday.
The Mustangs beat Everett Alvarez 52-48, improving to 15-8 overall and 10-1 in league play.
Maddy Cox led Gilroy with 12 points, followed by Nia Pollard with 11. Holly Lam and Brianna Barron both posted eight.
The Mustangs found themselves in foul trouble early and had to make adjustments, but was able to finish off strong. Sam Delatorre was key to the game’s finish, getting the points when the team needed it — including a 3-pointer that helped sustain its lead.
“Overall (it) was a very tough game,” Mustangs coach Mitchell Pierce said via text.
Gilroy has a chance to be crowned league champions, pending a Alisal loss and/or a win at North Monterey County at 7 p.m. Thursday for the regular season finale.Â
