The Christopher girls basketball team held Salinas to single-digit scores for three out of four periods.
Defensive was king for the Cougars who went on to win 43-38 over the visiting Salinas Thursday.
Salinas only reached double-digits in the second quarter when it posted 16 points, which tied the game at 25-25 at the half. 
Christopher went on to outscore Salinas 18-11 after the break.
Dejah Raoof led the Cougars with 13 points. Cydney Caradonna posted 11. Ally Foster added seven points, while Christa Arroyo scored six.
Christopher (8-8 overall, 3-2 in league) will play at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Seaside.
Pollard leads Mustangs past Alvarez
Nia Pollard racked up 19 points for the Gilroy girls basketball team Thursday — but she wasn’t the only one in double digits. 
Holly Lam added 13 points for the Mustangs as they cruised past Everett Alvarez 62-47 on the road.
The win puts Gilroy at .500 on the season at 7-7 overall and 4-1 in league play.
Gilroy will be back in action at 7 p.m. Tuesday, playing host to North Monterey County. 
BOYS BASKETBALL
Mustangs top N.Salinas
Travis Moulden and Josiah Wiley proved to be double trouble for North Salinas.
The duo each scored 15 points in the Mustangs 62-51 win on the road Friday.
Four Mustangs — including Moulden and Wiley — scored in double-digits. Zach Loo added 11 points, while Elijah Floyd scored 10. 
Gilroy (7-10, 3-2) will be back on the court at 7 p.m. Wednesday to host North Monterey County. 
CHS falls to Salinas, Monterey
The Christopher boys basketball team dropped its fourth straight game, a 70-41 loss at Salinas Friday.
Salinas jumped out to 20-point lead at the half, 36-16, that the Cougars weren’t able to recover from. 
Evan Shapiro scored three 3-pointers to lead the Christopher with 15 points. 
Christopher also hosted Monterey Wednesday. Shane Suttles led the team with 21 points, while Alex Pacheco added 13. Unfortunately for the hosts, they lost 66-59 in OT.
Christopher trailed 38-25 at the half, but rebounded after the break to score 31 points. The home team, however, was held to three points in OT.

Suttles netted four 3-pointers in that game. 
 
The Cougars (8-8 overall, 2-3 in league) will host Seaside at 7 p.m. Wednesday. 
 
Oakwood roll Anzar in battle of Hawks
 
The Oakwood boys basketball team continues to roll, picking up a 70-24 win at Anzar Thursday.
 
 Still playing without the services of 6-foot-9 Justin Mortensen, Oakwood (16-2) was able to press and trap on its way to building up a 42-12 lead at halftime.
 
Sophomore Miles Batey was the high-point man, finishing with 18 points and five rebounds. The 6-7 Zac Jenkins tossed in 14 points and added eight rebounds.
 
Youssef Eshra finished with nine points, eight assists and four steals, while Nate Schilling chipped in with eight points, six assists and six rebounds. Sophomore Ben Millward added eight points, four assists and two steals. Evan Richards added seven points, five rebounds and four assists.
 
Oakwood will play at Pacific Collegiate at 7 p.m. tonight. 
 
BOYS SOCCER
 
Cougars edge Seaside
 
After three straight ties, the Christopher boys soccer team finally notched a win. 
 
The Cougars topped Seaside 3-2 at home Thursday to improve to 2-5-5 overall, 1-1-4 in league play.
 
Christopher took an early 1-0 lead into halftime after scoring in the eighth minute.
 
The Cougars would score again in the 65th minute to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Seaside’s goals came in the 70th and 73rd minutes to tie the game at 2-2, but Christopher would score again in the 78th minutes to take the lead for good.
 
Stats from this game were not yet available.
 
Christopher will play at 3 p.m. Thursday at Monterey. The team will square off against Gilroy in the ‘El Classico’ at 5:30 p.m. Friday. 
 
Jimenez scores 20th as Mustangs edge Alvarez
 
Andres Jimenez has been almost unstoppable for the Gilroy boys soccer team as of late.
 
Jimenez scored twice for the Mustangs in their 3-2 win over Everett Alvarez Thursday in Salinas. 
 
Gilroy jumped out to a 2-1 lead at the half after Jimenez scored his 19th and 20th goals of the season.
 
Luis Urias netted the game winner in the second half. 
 
Gilroy will host Alisal at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday and play Christopher in the ‘El Classico’ at 5:30 p.m. Friday at home. 
 
WRESTLING
 
Mustangs 4th at Temecula
 
The Gilroy wrestling team was already flying high entering this past weekend’s Mid-California Tournament.
 
The Mustangs placed fourth out of 78 teams at the Temecula Invitational Jan. 18 and brought home two individual championships.
 
Standout seniors Nikko Villarreal (145 lbs.) and Paul Fox (152 lbs.) both finished first. Fox was also named the MVP Upper Weight, earning the honor with four pins, one tech fall and one decision through the two-day tournament.
 
Matt Penyascek (170) finished second, while his twin brother Mark (182) finished fourth. Noe Garcia (182) was sixth.
 
The Mustangs will wrestle in a dual meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Palma. They will compete at the Overfelt Classic Saturday.
