South County residents might notice a column of smoke rising to the north during the next few days, but the source of smoke will be a manmade, rather than natural, fire.

Firefighters will set about 350 acres of wildland ablaze Wednesday as part of a prescribed burn that will last two days, pending favorable weather conditions and approval from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. CalFire and the Santa Clara County Department of Parks and Recreation will monitor the burn, which will originate at Grant Ranch about seven miles east of San Jose. Officials expect that smoke from the burn will be visible from most of San Jose and the south Santa Clara Valley.

Firefighters have been conducting prescribed burns in the area for several years in an effort to increase biodiversity, control noxious weeds, enhance wildlife habitat and prevent large wildland fires.
