Dear Editor,
This letter is in regards to Tim Kenworthy, softball coach at
Gavilan College and the decision by the Gavilan College trustees
and administrators not to grant tenure to him. I was one of many
who spoke on his behalf. My comments to trustees were as
follows:

This letter is in regards to Tim Kenworthy, softball coach at Gavilan College and the decision by the Gavilan College trustees and administrators not to grant tenure to him. I was one of many who spoke on his behalf. My comments to trustees were as follows:
“Eleven months ago I spoke to you, the School Board on the subject of my disagreement with the cancellation of our last four softball games by the athletic director. I stated that I would be writing a letter explaining my position along with phoning each board member. Did you ever wonder why the letter was never sent, the phone calls never placed – all because we were assured that if we backed off everything would be okay. ‘Just recruit, and field a team” we were told. We did do that.
“We have a great team, a winning season, and an enjoyable group of young women. A few of those women came to us by word of mouth. So if Tim is not a good coach, why did they come to us? I have been coaching girls’ athletics for many years – from Little League, to summer travel softball, junior high and high school basketball and softball. I can honestly say that coaching girls and young women is not an easy task.
“I do believe that Tim is a very qualified coach. He is enthusiastic and knowledgeable. He has done a fine job in building the program and facility. He is trying to erase the reputation that Gavilan softball had. We have a good facility that lacks a scoreboard and a fence.
“One last bit of food for thought – Do you believe that some type of recognition should have been given to all the volunteers and donors in this community who worked on our softball field three years ago? A dinner was also promised that never materialized. Tim Kenworthy did thank those people with pictures and letters. The administration of the school did not do a thing. Tim and I have yet to be thanked as well.
“Since I spoke to the board, the men’s baseball team’s new scoreboard is being installed – go figure. All this, even after we were told we would have a fence and a scoreboard. In the fall, the administration asked for quotes on fencing. Those are the issues that need to be addressed and questions that need to be asked.”
