Hollister – Following weeks of research and lobbying, two students presented the San Benito High School Board of Trustees with a proposal to change the school’s name to its colloquial moniker – Hollister High. .
“Hollister is our city’s name, so it should be the name of our first high school, too,” said SBHS junior Megan Biggs, who spoke before the board recently. “It’s a matter of pride for the community.”
Despite their enthusiasm, proponents of the change have their work cut out for them. A switch could potentially cost the district thousands of dollars, says the finance department.
The SBHS Associated Student Body and student council decided early in the year to support the effort after listening to science teacher and coach Bill Johnson and the late Gary Goularte speak on the merits of changing the name. The task of persuading the board fell to Biggs and freshman Sam Doty, who researched the history of the school’s name.
The duo presented football photos from as far back as 1910 labeled “Hollister High School,” and pointed out that the school’s Alma Mater song clearly says “Hollister, Hail to Thee.” The San Benito County Board of Supervisors approved a resolution stating that the school should be known as Hollister High School.
