Think back on all the three putts you have had in your last couple of rounds of golf. Now think again and honestly evaluate which were caused by a distance problem, and which by an accuracy problem. I guarantee you that it’s probably 4 to 1 that it’s a distance that caused the three putt.
It is not difficult to hit a putt 4 or 5 feet beyond or short of the hole because your distance wasn’t correct. It is difficult, no matter how bad a putter you think you may be, to miss a putt 4 or 5 feet to the right or left.
The best way to improve your distance consistency is to putt with the same smooth rythm no matter how long your putt is. Keep your putting stroke in second gear throughout the entire stroke. Don’t take it back in first gear then go through in fourth gear. Use the length of your stroke and the smooth rythm to adjust your distance. The longer the putt, the longer the stroke.
When practicing, practice distance. Don’t worry about how many putts you make but more important how many you are able to place with the proper distance around the hole.
Remember when all else fails, take a lesson. You’ll be surprised how much we can help.
