GILROY – Danielle Scibuola scored three runs and knocked in another, Melinda Ortiz struck out 11 batters on the mound and the Gavilan College softball team dispatched visiting Foothill College 6-2 on Tuesday in Gilroy.

The Rams are now in the 4-1 Coast Conference South, 8-16 overall.

Gavilan, which held Foothill scoreless until the fourth, built a 3-0 lead over the first two innings behind an RBI single from Angelica Galindo and another RBI off of a Haley MacFarlane fielder’s choice.

Foothill kept it interesting when it plated a pair of runs in the top half of the fourth to cut into Gavilan’s three-run lead, but the Rams answered right back in the following frame with three more runs.

After Danielle Payne led off the inning with a walk, Scibuola trailed with an RBI double. Scibuola, meanwhile, would later score on a wild pitch.

Later, Andrea Garcia reached first on a base on balls, while Audra Brown followed with an RBI single to score Garcia, making it 6-2 Rams.

Gilroy product Melinda Ortiz went seven innings and scattered two runs on six hits. She hit three batters but didn’t walk any.

Last weekend at a tournament at Ohlone College in Fremont, the Rams compiled a 1-3 record, with their lone victory coming against Chabot College by an 8-7 margin.

Otherwise, Gavilan lost to Taft 8-5, fell to College of the Siskiyous 15-0 and were defeated by Feather River 5-1.

The Rams will return to Coast Conference play on Thursday when they visit Chabot College in Hayward. First pitch is at 3 p.m.
