Gavilan’s valiant road effort falls short against San Mateo
Gilroy – Against Diablo Valley College last week, Gavilan College head football coach John Lango didn’t feel his Rams played with heart.
Against College of San Mateo Saturday, they did. But it still wasn’t enough.
The Rams (1-4) fell to a very tough College of San Mateo, one of the state’s top junior college teams, by a score of 51-13.
“The last three teams we’ve played are top ten in Northern California,” Lango said. “(My team) played hard and battled.”
The Rams were held scoreless until the third quarter when Garrett Burgess (17 carries, 113 yards) had a 56-yard touchdown run, capped off by Tony Castaneda’s extra-point, which made it 30-7 San Mateo.
In the fourth quarter, Gavilan scored again when Shane Butcher (8 receptions, 161 yards) had an 84-yard TD reception from Daniel Salinas. However, the Rams gave up 21 points in the final quarter.
The Rams get to rest this week before opening conference play Oct. 15 against DeAnza at San Benito High.
