Gilroy – What a difference a year makes. The Gavilan Rams, winners of just eight softball games all last season, already have seven W’s under their belts … and the 2005 season is just getting started.
The Rams took three of five games at the College of the Sequoias Tournament in Tulare this past weekend, and head coach Tim Kenworthy has his sights on at least 10 more wins this season.
That number, 17 wins, would better the mark set by the 2003 Rams, who won 16, went 9-7 in the Coast Conference and are considered the best Gavilan softball squad ever, Kenworthy said.
“We think we’re going to beat that this year,” he said. “That’s our goal.”
On Saturday, Gavilan got out of the gate at the Sequoias tourney with a 7-4 comeback win against Porterville College. Trailing 4-0 after two innings, Erinn Gouker’s pinch-hit grand slam capped a seven-run outburst in the third.
The Rams edged West Hills College 7-5 in the second game. Amanda Jackson went 3-for-3 and drove in three runs and Justine McDonald also went 3-for-3, as Courtney Colianna struck out three and allowed just three runs to pick up the win.
A run in the fifth inning was the lone blemish in the game for Gavilan starting pitcher Gina Botkins against Consumnes River, which beat the Rams 1-0.
The next day, Gav split their two Sunday games, beating Allan Hancock 6-0 in the first and losing to a state-ranked Taft team 11-3 in the second. Destinee Powers and Botkins combined to throw a three-hitter at Hancock as the Ram offense managed to score in every inning but the fourth.
