GILROY – Thirteen teams with players from all over South County and beyond took over all three fields at Christmas Hill Park for the inaugural Dutchman’s Pizza Hot August Softball Tournament on Saturday.
The contenders, vying for championship glory and bragging rights, were split into three divisions, Men’s Upper Division, Men’s Lower Division and Co-Ed. The men’s teams played four games each and the co-ed teams played five in the round-robin tournament.
Teams were awarded two points per victory, with tiebreakers determined on the total amount scored throughout the 12-hour softball marathon.
Co-Ed tournament champions Don’t Trip from Hollister went an undefeated 5-0, beating its opponents by a combined 32 runs. Team Garza, sponsored by Blackout Window Tinting from Gilroy, took second place.
The men’s upper division was as competitive as it could get.
Deez Nuts had a fifth-round bye, but stood by as Cali-Stix had a chance to steal the first-place honors away in its final game.
But Deez Nuts’ prayers were answered as they took first place, beating out Cali-Stix by one run in a tight tiebreaker. Selfmade and Talamo Foods tied for third place sending both teams to the total-run tiebreaker. Talamo Foods edged out Selfmade by six runs to claim sole possession of third place.
The Men’s Lower Division was an exciting battle, which left three teams tied for first. It came down to the final round of games.
Just Blaze from Gilroy took third place with 44 runs, Gorillas from Hollister took second with 52 runs and Spark It from Gilroy took first place, scoring 56 runs.
