Summer Fun added another reason as to why its name rings true, using three extra-inning rallies to pull out a 9-8 victory over Package Deal in 10 innings to capture the championship of the 40th annual Co-Rec Fourth of July Tournament ‘C’ Division on Wednesday at Las Animas Park.
Package Deal, which had to work its way up into the championship round by winning three games Wednesday in the loser’s bracket, opened the two-day tournament with a 13-12 loss to Summer Fun on Tuesday night at Christmas Hill Park.
Package Deal bounced back with a 19-7 win over Cleats & Cleavage, edged Mickey’s RV 7-6, as Karissa Kozacek went 3-for-3, then topped Good Vibes 12-2 with Rick Trujillo going 3-for-3 and Rudy Tovar ripping a home run.
In the finals rematch, Marco Lopez doubled and scored on a Joseph Tovar sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth to pull Summer Fun into a 4-4 tie with Package Deal.
After Rocio Reyes, Sam Felix and AJ Martinez each scored in the top of the eighth for Package Deal, Dora Olivares, Marco Lopez and Barb Lemberger each scored for Summer Fun to force another extra inning.
Tiffany McIntosh singled and scored on a two-out double by Trujillo to give the Package an 8-7 lead in the ninth. But, after two outs were recorded in the bottom of the Summer ninth, consecutive singles by Donny Gooding-Olivares, Lopez and Lemberger pushed the game into another tie at 8-8.
Summer Fun took the title in the 10th when Norma Wendt’s single plated Shawna Snakenberg.
Good Vibes claimed third place in the six-team field. The Vibes dropped out of a winner’s bracket with a 10-9 loss to Summer Fun. Derek Orca homered for the Vibes in the defeat.
Mickey’s RV, a 13-6 winner over Untamed on Wednesday morning behind three extra-base hits from Brian Collom, earned fourth-place honors. Ernie Payan hit two triples and a single for Untamed.
Just 2 Party topped Unorganized Crime 7-4 on Wednesday to complete a clean 3-0 mark and sercure the title in the five-team ‘B’ Division. Adrianna Osuna keyed the Party offense with a double and single.
Manny Hernandez went 4-for-4 as the Crime outlasted Jugs & Thugs 7-5, leaving the losers with the third-place title. Daniel Salinas went 4-for-4 as JR’s Crew, the fourth-place team, defeated the Comebacks 15-5.
