Cars and Movies Fill Downtown

Gilroy – Tonight is the final Wednesday in the “Hot Rods and Cool Flics” series, taking place in the downtown at Monterey and Fifth streets. The evening features dozens of classic cars, which start to arrive at 5pm, and a movie starting at dusk.

This week’s film is “The Parent Trap.” Attendees are encouraged to bring chairs and a bowl for free popcorn.

Programs Benefit From Tourney

Gilroy – Texas Hold ‘Em teams may register for the End of Summer Tournament set for 10am Saturday Aug. 25 at the Gilroy Senior Center.

The four-person teams must include a $60 entry fee to play in the one-day event. Team members play at different tables. Proceeds from the 14th tournament in the series produced by the Gilroy Community Services Department are used for youth, teen and senior programs. The All-In Four is the defending team champion and Barbara Drewitz the individual champion. Team registration continues through Friday.

SC Democratic Club Meets

Gilroy – Join members of the South County Democratic Club for a day of food, friendship and education about local environmental issues at a fund-raiser from 11am to 3pm, Sunday, Aug. 19 at San Martin Country Park, 13865 Monterey Road, San Martin. They will be featuring speakers on the environment and have invited the candidates for Gilroy City Council, the Gilroy school board and Assembly District 27 to speak about their campaigns.

Suggested donation is $20, children younger than 12 $5. They are asking that each member and or family attending bring a dessert with a great Democratic name. There will be a prize for the best name. They also will hold a silent auction.

Sons of Italy Barbecue

Gilroy – The Sons of Italy, Gilroy Lodge, is holding its annual barbecue Sunday, at Christmas Hill Park.

Festivities begin at noon with appetizers followed by a New York steak barbecue at 1pm, including salad, beans, garlic bread and drinks. Adults $15, children younger than 12 $7.50. Entertainment includes music, a raffle and pleasant company.

Youth Commission Has Vacancies

Gilroy – The Youth Commission, a group of individuals ages 13 to 18 that represent the youth of the City of Gilroy, is recruiting new applicants that reside in the Gilroy Unified School District. The Youth Commission fulfills many responsibilities, the most important of which is to make recommendations to the City Council on issues involving the youth of the City of Gilroy. These issues include health and safety, schools, recreation and other concerns and interests that are important to the youth of Gilroy.

Terms are one to two years. Applications are available from the City Clerk’s Office, 7351 Rosanna St. All application materials must be turned in by 5pm Aug. 24.

The City Council will conduct interviews at 7pm Sept. 10, at the Gilroy City Council Chambers, 7351 Rosanna St.

Gilroy – The Gilroy High School class of 1947 will celebrate its 60th reunion Sept. 8 at the home of Charlie and Kathy Buck on N. Monterey Highway.
