Walking on the Uvas levee, one can take in the beautiful sight
of 50 or so lovely, black, sun-baked, full plastic garbage bags
which have sat for months next to the east side of the Uvas levee
south of Thomas Road by the nice oak tree. Though it’s not nearly
as bad as the spike in graffiti, it’s surely blight. City personnel
drive near there all the time, and yet the big pile of trash bags
sit. What’s being done?

Farmer looking for recycler
“Walking on the Uvas levee, one can take in the beautiful sight of 50 or so lovely, black, sun-baked, full plastic garbage bags which have sat for months next to the east side of the Uvas levee south of Thomas Road by the nice oak tree. Though it’s not nearly as bad as the spike in graffiti, it’s surely blight. City personnel drive near there all the time, and yet the big pile of trash bags sit. What’s being done?”
Dear It’s Surely Blight,
Red Phone contacted Operation Services Manager who referred Red Phone to Dan Fiorio, owner of Fiorio Farms. He grows bell peppers on the land adjacent to the Uvas levee and said the the sun-baked, full plastic garbage bags are piles of plastic and spent irrigation. Rather than throwing them into the landfill, he’s been trying to find a company to recycle them after the original firm backed out. The bags, about 10 to 12 tons of of the used plastic and irrigation tubing, have been there since November.
Fiorio said his intention was to have them removed early this year, but had a hard time finding an alternate company to pick them up. He did say Thursday that he thinks he found a company.
“We’re waiting for recyclers to pick them up, hopefully by the end of this week,” he said.
Who buys foreclosed homes?
“The second home on my block has just gone into foreclosure. Who can I contact to see who (if anyone) purchases either home?”
Dear Wondering,
Red Phone has an idea. Go to WhoBoughtWhat.com, where you can find a list of homes bought in Gilroy. About 34 sold in May.
Good luck, good caller.
Doggone dog park
“Hi Red Phone, about 10 months ago the Dispatch ran an article about the new off-leash dog park that is supposed to go into Las Animas Park. The article stated that $250,000 had been allocated for the project and that it will be ready this summer. I have called the city several times in recent months and they advise that the project is going to start in June. To date…nothing is happening over there! It is becoming very expensive to take our dog to Morgan Hill every day. Please try to find out if the city still plans to build this dog park.”
and,
“Hi Red Phone, shortly after the dog park in Morgan Hill opened, the Dispatch published plans for a dog park at Las Animas park in Gilroy. It was supposed to be open by June, 2008. Are they still going to build it?”
Dear Dog Tired,
Red Phone contacted Bill Headley, facilities development manager, who said the city has $197,000 budgeted for parkland improvements for the recovered park pond area at Las Animas Veteran’s Park.
“The graveled dog park area to be constructed later this summer will be a 1.16-acre fenced dog facility,” he said. “Improvements next to the dog park area will be a new .83-acre park with picnic and turf grass area which is also part of the recovered park pond area. The city hopes to complete construction of the dog park facility for dog and owner use by September or October of this year.
So good caller, you’ll have to continue to drive to Morgan Hill, or you can use the ever-popular Uvas levee, where you can view the 50 or so bags of used plastic and irrigation tubing waiting to be recycled.
