I’d like to know why the school doesn’t do anything about the
parking over at the high school over on Princevalle. A lot of
people park in in the red. I think they should allow parents to
park in the red even if it’s for maybe 5 or 10 minutes for picking
up their kids from school or dropping the kids off. In front of the
high school they have the curb painted red and there’s no parking
and that makes it hard for parents to drop off and pick up their
kids.

“I’d like to know why the school doesn’t do anything about the parking over at the high school over on Princevalle. A lot of people park in in the red. Dear Frustrated, Red Phone understands this can be a problem, especially during tight schedules for both students and parents.

So, Red Phone contacted Jim Gillio, spokesman for the Gilroy Police Department, who said the main reason for not having people even temporarily park in the red zones is he does not want cars to be double parked. This would then cause hectic traffic to drive around those cars and make it dangerous for children crossing.

This might be a good opportunity for more parents and students to ‘go green.’ You could ride your bikes to school as a family or walk or even carpool.

Police cheer on Monday Night Football

“I was at Happy Dog Pizza on Monday night and watched three policemen walk into Los Pericos Taqueria and watch Monday Night Football for well over an hour. Also three police cars were parked outside. I am not aware of how many policemen are on duty at any given time on a Monday night but if three can all take a break for over an hour all at the same time, possibly we have too many policemen. Who’s watching the streets while they are watching football? To me, a taxpaying citizen, it seems like a complete waste of taxpayers money.

Maybe we do need some layoffs to get city employees doing their jobs more efficiently.”

Dear Concerned, Red Phone wouldn’t be telling the truth if we said we didn’t sneak a few peeks at the game while we should have been working. Still, we understand why you would be concerned.

We contacted Denise Turner, Gilroy chief of police, right away. Jim Gillio, spokesman for the police department, responded saying there was only one officer and one multi-service officer eating dinner together while one other officer stopped by for about five minutes to pick up food to go. An additional officer stopped by the restaurant for about five minutes.

“I’m sorry a citizen took offense at our officers having a meal,” said Gillio. There was one multi-service officer, four officers and one sergeant on duty Monday night. Officers are paid during their breaks because they are still on call and might need to leave, Gillio added.

While the San Francisco 49ers were fumbling every chance they got, we didn’t hear of the police dropping any leads or fumbling any calls on their end. Either way, it’s too bad the officers chose this night to watch the game after such a disappointing loss from the San Francisco 49ers.

Shopping carts disappearing

“I’m curious why the Gilroy Police Department doesn’t do anything, does not make any arrests or any citations, for people in Gilroy who steal grocery carts from all the stores. Grocery carts, from what I’ve found out, cost anywhere from $250 and $500 apiece. I’d think this would elevate it above a petty crime or a petty theft. If I was to walk around Gilroy carrying the Wal Mart sign or the ball from the old 76 or another item owned from a store or merchant, I’d be arrested immediately. But we see people consistently stealing carts and pushing them all over town. You know these merchants have to pass on the cost of the lost carts to the consumers, and already with rising food costs, we don’t need anyone contributing to higher food costs.”

Dear Local Shopper, Red Phone was wondering the same thing so Jim Gillio was contacted again. Gillio confirmed that it is illegal to take these carts from the premises with the intention of not returning them immediately. However, it seems to Red Phone that nothing is being done about these instances. Also, a petty theft is considered stealing anything worth less than $400. So, even if it is a very fancy-looking shopping cart costing $250, it is still just a petty theft.
