Red Phone: Low branches need to be cut

Red Phone: Dear Let Freedom Drive, About 85 Marines were returning home from Iraq last week in two busses, said Lynn Tross, a ride captain with Patriot Guard – a national organization that helps welcome home troops.

They were being escorted from the Marine base at Camp Pendleton to San Bruno. About 20 emergency service organizations were on hand to show their support as the envoy came up from Interstate 5 to Highway 152 to U.S. 101, Tross said.

“People from all over the county have been posting messages of support,” she said. “It means everything to them to see people care when they come home. So many citizens are indifferent that they are serving over there. This is the least we can do.”

Principal on special assignment

“Why during this time of budget crisis did the GUSD take the principal from Rucker and put her on special assignment and hire a new principal. Why are we (taxpayers) paying for someone on special assignment and what benefit are we getting from it?”

Red Phone: Dear Left In Limbo, Good experienced help is always hard to find. Rucker Elementary School will also get a new principal this school year. Principal Barbara Keesaw will move to the district office to oversee the training of special education staff in a department that “has been understaffed for a long time,” Flores said. Like Graciela Valladares’ position, Keesaw’s will be evaluated after one year. Her position, however, will be funded for one year by a special education grant and does not impact the general fund, Flores said.

Column was off the mark

“Hi Red Phone, Your response last Friday to that caller who has a legitimate concern about the blowers was really lousy. I know that they will never outlaw these blowers because the gardening industry would not know what to do without a blower. The people who are using the leaf blowers should use them more responsibly, and that was the point of the original caller. You made it about someone else picking up the garbage.”

Red Phone: Dear Not Impressed, Thanks for the call. You are absolutely correct. Red Phone wasn’t disagreeing with the original caller. People still have to take responsibility for their own actions. The whole point was that if debris is blown into the streets, it has a good chance of winding up in the gutter. But that doesn’t mean that people who are blowing it around can’t take a couple minutes to clean it up. So please, blower users, clean up after yourselves, so others do not have to.
