Feeling deflated
“I was just wondering if there’s a gas station in Gilroy where they pump gas, wash the windows and check tire pressure for senior citizens. Can you help this senior citizen?”
Dear Need Help,
Red Phone contacted Michael Bozzo, proprietor of Bozzo’s Union 76 Station. He said, “there are no full service stations in Gilroy but we do pump gas for handicap if they have a placard. And, we will do it on request if our cashier has time.” Bozzo suggested visiting the station at 601 First St. near Carmel Street, and see what can be worked out. Hope that helps.
How did Black Friday get so dark?
“What is the meaning behind the term Black Friday and how did it originate?”
Dear Curious,
It is a bit late, but Red Phone has an answer. According to about.com, the origin of Black Friday comes from the shift to profitability during the holiday season. Black Friday was when retailers went from being unprofitable, or “in the red,” to being profitable, or “in the black,” at a time when accounting records were kept by hand and red indicated loss and black profit. It traditionally falls the day after Thanksgiving.
Blowin’ in the wind
“I just passed the Dispatch office and saw your tattered and torn American flag flapping in the wind. I think it’s time to get that replaced.”
Dear Flag Waver,
Thank you for pointing out correct flag ettiquette. The Dispatch will be purchasing a new flag in the very near future and raising it with pride. It is important that everyone displays Old Glory correctly.
Don’t be wishy-washy
“I’ve been driving around town to the bank and market and different places and I’ve seen dozens of cars in driving rain with their windshield wipers on but no headlights and I think the law states that any time it’s raining hard enough for windshield wipers to be going that you’re suppoosed to have headlights on. Just wondered what the deal is? Is that the law?”
Dear Wiper Watcher,
Yes that is the law. According the Department of Motor Vehicles, section 24400. (a) A motor vehicle, other than a motorcycle, shall be … operated during darkness, or inclement weather, or both, with at least two lighted headlamps. Inclement weather is described as (1) a condition that prevents a driver of a motor vehicle from clearly discerning a person or another motor vehicle on the highway from a distance of 1,000 feet; and (2) a condition requiring the windshield wipers to be in continuous use due to rain, mist, snow, fog, or other precipitation or atmospheric moisture. But, Red Phone does not believe the state is looking out for our best interests, rather, it’s just another way for the state to collect more revenue and it gives police another reason to pull us over. Red Phone would rather police hunt for the sexual predators that wander not only our little burg, but throughout the state.
