Police

Could you print the phone number and contact person to file a
complaint with the CHP? Today (May 12) on Highway 101 where there
was an accident there was an officer in one of the cars, but he was
actually patrolling and yelling over his loudspeaker. His behavior
was unbecoming of a police officer. This is the second time I’ve
seen that type of behavior from the CHP. Something needs to be done
about this. Controlling a situation or accident does not mean
having an attitude or being cocky. They can keep things under
control and be polite. Please print the contact name and number for
CHP complaints in the Gilroy office. I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks.

Dear Wants to File a Complaint,

Red Phone agrees that all law enforcement officers should treat the public with the utmost respect, sadly, like all professions, there are those who can and will abuse authority. So, Red Phone contacted the California Highway Patrol’s Gilroy/Hollister office and was told residents who want to file a complaint should call 848-2324 and ask for Administrative Sgt. Dave Hill. He’ll forward the complaint to the sergeant who supervises the officer. Hope that helps good caller.

Thomas Road still a mess

“Dear Red Phone, I’m following up on the caller who asked about the stop sign on Luchessa. Seems it was moved about 25 feet farther west, where you turn left onto Thomas Road. The stop sign is in the middle of the intersection rather than at the corner. When you make a left turn you encroach the bike path lane on Thomas Road. It is very unsafe! When traveling southbound on Thomas Road towards Santa Teresa, you now have left turn arrows in the center directed into the farm field. If you are traveling northbound on Thomas Road towards Luchessa some of the left turn arrows point at a curb with no street in site. The engineers should have taken their plans to the actual site to verify their changes made sense, because now it’s just a big mess and a potential safety hazard.”

and,

“In a recent edition, there was talk about the road striping issue on Thomas Road. It is deplorable. So happy it was in the paper. Another issue is the stop sign. Where they placed it on Thomas Road is causing a problem. There is going to be an accident with people coming from the west side there from the school you have to turn your head around to see the stop sign. It’s causing an obstruction. I’m afraid somebody’s going to get hit there. Thank you.”

Dear Peeved,

Red Phone contacted City Engineer Don Dey, who said staff took a look and clearly the design is not unsafe.

“Cars and trucks have enough room to turn without encroaching into the bike lane, whether cars and trucks choose to avoid the bike lane is an independent operator decision, but from an engineering design there is enough room. However to ease the feel of that turn we will investigate and possibly move the stop sign on Luchessa back 10 or 15 feet to make it feel a little smoother. As far as restriping on Thomas. What we did there is we took out the old striping and put in what we call two-way center left turn striping and matched the pavement marking and stripes with the California manual on uniform traffic control devices. It’s not inconsistent with a lot of other streets such as Wren and Monterey. What might be a little different is the fact that we did put in the recommended left turn lane movement symbols identified in the manual. Makes it easier for residents to get in and out of side streets along Thomas Road. There was a problem with the previous design and we’ve cleaned that up.”

What about that new stop sign? Why won’t the school district turn off those sprinklers? Red Phone is here to help.
