Years ago, West Coast Linen or Marriott Linen at 8190 Murray
Ave. burned.
“Years ago, West Coast Linen or Marriott Linen at 8190 Murray Ave. burned. The building is now a shell of its burned self. They’ve braced the building, and the braces are now rusting and bending in half. Can’t the code enforcement get rid of that eyesore. Make them tear it down and clean up that area? I’d be interested to know. Thank you.”
Red Phone: Dear Turn And Burn, the building was not actually burned by a fire, said Gilroy Code Enforcement Scott Barron. Lint from the laundry operations built up on the roof and plugged up the roof drains, causing a portion of the roof to collapse when rain water was prevented from properly draining, he said.
“The owner made numerous assurances to the city that the structure would be repaired, including providing the city with a letter from an engineering firm assuring the city that the structure was stable in its current state,” Barron said. “That assurance was to provide them the temporary breathing room to complete the plans and make the necessary repairs.”
West Coast Linens’ parent company Lohrey Enterprises Inc., filed for bankruptcy last year and the operation has been shut down.
“The property and buildings have been tied up in bankruptcy court since that time,” Barron said. “The city has recorded violation notices with the county recorder’s office, thereby alerting potential buyers that the city will require them to correct the violations. I believe a couple of potential buyers have stopped by the city asking questions with the hope of purchasing the property.”
Light stays green too long
“Can something be done about this intersection? The lights stay green on Santa Teresa far longer than needed even in the wee hours of the morning. There also needs to be a right turn only lane on eastbound Mantelli. A significant proportion of cars turn right here, and the giving up a through lane would actually improve the flow.
Red Phone: Dear Stop And Go, Red Phone contacted City Engineer Don Dey who said he wasn’t sure what the issue with the light was.
“I’ll check with our traffic signal maintenance contractor and see if I we can find out what is happening,” Dey said. “I know what the caller is asking about with the right turn. It’s not something we have considered, but it is definitely something we can look into.”
So stay tuned, good readers, and Red Phone will let you know what the city finds out about the light and the turn lane.
How to fly the flag
“When there are three flag poles of equal height, from which pole should the American Flag be flown?
Red Phone: Dear Flag Flyer, the National Flag Code that was adopted in 1923 and then became a law in 1942 serves as a guide for displaying the Stars and Stripes. According to the code, the United States flag should be flown higher than other flags and should be in the center. It should be the first put up and last taken down.
