Dogs need new temporary home

Every time I walk by the parking lot on the corner of Church and
Seventh streets I hear large dogs barking and howling. Most likely,
the people living near there don’t appreciate this much. Why are
dogs somewhere in that lot? Who is responsible for them? Are they
being mistreated? Are they watchdogs for the buildings and cars
there?

Dogs need new temporary home

“Every time I walk by the parking lot on the corner of Church and Seventh streets I hear large dogs barking and howling. Most likely, the people living near there don’t appreciate this much. Why are dogs somewhere in that lot? Who is responsible for them? Are they being mistreated? Are they watchdogs for the buildings and cars there?”

Red Phone:

Dear Dog Tired, Red Phone contacted Sgt. Jim Gillio, who said the city of Gilroy dog kennels are located in the “Old PD” parking lot.

“This is where all of the stray dogs are placed until they can be transported to the San Martin Animal Shelter,” he said. “The City of Gilroy is in the process of looking into alternatives to this location. The dogs are well cared for by community service officers.”

So, for those who live in the area and are tired of dogs barking, keep your eyes and ears open. Someday, the dogs will be relocated.

Who checks immigration status?

“There seem to be quite a few unlicensed drivers here in Gilroy. Does the Gilroy police department check the immigration status of those pulled over without a license? If not, then at what level do they check? I’ve seen only one suspect put on immigration hold and that was the guy stalking little girls. Perhaps crime could be reduced by cooperating with federal law enforcement agencies.

Red Phone:

Dear Crime Watcher, Red Phone contacted Gillio, who said police do not check the immigration status of drivers stopped for vehicle code violations.

“If a person is arrested, the Santa Clara County Jail booking form requires us to ask citizenship status and place of birth,” he said. “Immigration and Customs Enforcement is in charge of immigration enforcement.”

“Why is it often the case that I find news about the city of Gilroy first via alternate outside news sources? This concern reached a head when information about the recent officer-involved shooting was released within hours of the event on www.mercurynews.com and was not available until much later with www.gilroydispatch.com. I understand the recent restructuring to an almost strictly online source, but does this mean we will no longer be readily informed about news within our community?”

Red Phone:

Dear Concerned, Red Phone checked the archives, and you are correct. The shooting occurred about 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8. A press release was issued by the Gilroy Police Department nearly 24 hours later, at 7:23 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9. The paper to the north posted a short story to its Web site at 9:35 a.m. Feb. 9. The Dispatch posted a story at 1:40 p.m. Sunday and, obviously, the metropolitan daily has a much larger staff.

Nevertheless, if you want complete local coverage, you’ll only find it here. Dispatch reporters will always follow and finish the story. Tuesday, in fact, we published quotes from the brother-in-law who was in the car before family members left Gurmit Singh at the side of the road.

And we routinely break local stories like the tree falling on a car trapping one person and injuring two on Jan. 25 and the news that Jeff Garcia, former Gilroy High School and San Francisco 49er quarterback was selected to the National Football League’s Pro Bowl. Occasionally, we get beat on a local story, but we do our best to give you coverage that’s first and complete. Thanks for reading both online and in print.
