Dear Editor:

I read your sports editor’s column about private schools and agree with it – except it’s one year too late.

Beginning this year, Mitty, Bellarmine, Presentation, Sacred Heart Cathedral, Riordan, St. Francis, Serra, St. Ignatius, Sacred Heart Prep, Notre Dame-Belmont, and Valley Christian were all put into the West Catholic Athletic League due to the reasons you stated in your article.

About the only private schools left, which are not in a private league, are Palma, Notre Dame Salinas, Monte Vista Christian, Santa Catalina, Stevenson, and York. When the Central Coast Section did the league realignments, I’m sure they looked at these schools and found that it was not reasonable to combine the three larger, local private schools with Santa Catalina, etc. because of their small enrollments and because many sports are not offered at the small schools.

It also was not reasonable to put the three larger schools in the West Catholic League due to the travel time involved. The end result was Notre Dame Salinas and Palma ended up in the Tri-County League and Monte Viste Christian in the MBL. Maybe it’s not fair in the case of Palma and N.D.-Salinas, but it is certainly understandable.
