Christopher High field hockey ventured into its Mission Trail Athletic League opener against host Santa Catalina on Tuesday and survived with a 1-0 victory.

Kristen Mank scored the game’s lone goal, which was assisted by Sherelle Butler and came toward the end of the first half on a short corner opportunity. The Cougars had eight short corner tries in the opening half.

The Cougars (1-0-2 overall, 1-0 MTAL) return home Thursday for another MTAL tilt. They face Stevenson at 3:30 p.m. at CHS.

VOLLEYBALL

Gilroy High girls varsity traveled to San Jose to take on Pioneer, and in a matchup between two schools with a Mustang as the mascot, the GHS version came away with a 25-20, 15-25, 25-21, 25-22 victory on Tuesday night.

Meghan Adams and Lelani Mah led the charge offensively, and Nicloe Green was the top server, head coach Kassi Swalboski said.

It is a quick turnaround for Gilroy, which is back on its home court Wednesday against a n 8-1 Anzar High team. First serve is listed at 6 p.m.

TENNIS

Christopher High picked up its first team win of the season, capturing three out of the four singles matches en route to a 5-2 victory over Watsonville on Tuesday in Gilroy.

Adena Chen (No. 2 singles), Nubia Juarez (No. 3 singles) and Tiffany Roberts (No. 4 singles) all won in straight sets.

Malia Campos and Jade Bardrick paired up for a straight sets win at No. 2 doubles, and Sydney Tran and Kelly Nantais were triumphant at No. 3 doubles.

“The girls are playing better and settling in well in preparation for our league play,” coach Patrick McBrearty said. “I’m still working with the doubles teams, trying to put together the right combination.”

The Cougars are at home versus San Benito at 4 p.m. Thursday.

WATER POLO

The Christopher High boys water polo team lost to Stevenson on Tuesday. And while Paul Wells, who has been coaching both the boys and girls teams over the last two seasons, Jim Shuster has taken over the girls side.

GAVILAN COLLEGE

The Rams men’s soccer team slipped to 2-3 on the season after a 2-0 loss on the road to San Joaquin Delta College on Tuesday in Stockton.

Gavilan is back on the road Friday at Yuba College.
