The Christopher High girls varsity basketball team fended off a pesky North Monterey County squad in a 45-41 Monterey Bay League triumph on Wednesday night in Castroville.
Now at 6-1 in the MBL, the win sets up a prime-time meet-up with Seaside, which also sits at 6-1 after its 47-41victory over Monte Vista Christian, with first place on the line Friday night in Gilroy.
The Cougars needed to overcome a first-half deficit Wednesday night after the Condors, led by leading scorer Priscilla Mora (12 points), took a 17-14 lead into halftime. The three-point lead stood entering the fourth, but CHS outscored NMC 17-11 in the final eight minutes.
Hanna Tabron posted 15 points and 12 rebounds, Cydney Caradonna had 12 points and Olivia Tabron had 11 and 15 for the Cougars. Samantha Flores added 12 points and Casey Price had six for the Condors.
Friday’s showdown with Seaside is slated for 7 p.m. at CHS.
The junior varsity Cougars won 38-19.
• Andres Jimenez scored his third goal of the season but the Gilroy High boys varsity soccer team dropped its second straight Tri-County Athletic League tilt of the week, 2-1, at North Salinas on Wednesday.
The Mustangs (4-8-1 overall, 1-3-1 TCAL) have a chance to right the week with Salinas High in town Friday at 5:15 p.m.
• The Christopher High wrestling team cruised to victory against Pajaro Valley on Wednesday night, topping the visitors 60-16. The Cougars are now 4-0 in Monterey Bay League duals.
• The Gilroy High boys basketball team lost 43-24 to Salinas. The Mustangs conclude the first half of Tri-County Athletic League play at 1-5 and in sixth place. Palma and San Benito lead the way with 5-1 records, followed by Alvarez and Salinas each at 4-2.
