Sarah E. Hassell, 80, born in Wellsville Ohio, passed away Saturday, Oct. 19 in Morgan Hill. Her beloved husband, Edward, preceded her in death in 1998. Sally is survived by her two sons, Joseph Hassell of Rathdrum, Idaho and William Hassell of Boulder Creek, as well as her two grandchildren Brent Hassell and Erin Wickstrom.

She was a caring and thoughtful sister to her siblings Rev. William Griffiths of North Carolina, Dorothy Hayenga of Arizona, Virginia Sanderson of Escondido and the late Jack Griffiths.

Sally and Edward were married in Fresno in 1946 and came to Gilroy where they built their home and began raising their family. Over the years, they established strong ties within the community. In addition to raising two sons, Sally was also “Mom” to many Gilroy residents who have fond memories of being cared for in her home daycare service. Sally was an avid bridge player who doted on her teacup poodles and was always ready for a good game of UpWords.

Using her excellent accounting skills, she served as treasurer for the Gilroy Senior Center. Sally was a strong and proud woman who will be missed.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Oct. 24 at 2 p.m. at the Gilroy Seventh Day Adventist Church, 1575 Mantelli Drive in Gilroy.
