Dear Editor,
What’s wrong with David Kaeini (Letters – March 26)? Who’s responsible for his intolerance, religious hysteria, self-righteousness, lack of compassion and total unawareness of the real world? Consider:
1) He compares the approaching death of Terri Schiavo’s body to his Jesus dying – a ludicrous insult to all religious people. Contrary to his emotionalism, the death of Mrs. Schiavo’s body is not “… a symbol to all the world of the death of our innocence.”
This nation, since its creation, has undergone many actions and issues far more serious, changing and ultimately constructive than the death of one individual’s body.
Nor is the death “… a big, pivotal case, a huge case that has mushroomed into the Roe v. Wade of euthanasia …” This “case” is only the victim of public emotionalism – not a matter under adjudication by our legal system at this time!
2) He refers to America’s judiciary as “cold and heartless and out of control: little gods …” and asks “A state judge is more powerful than the governor and Congress?” It is not that a judge is more powerful.
It’s what that judge represents – Law – that makes him or her more powerful than any governor, Congress or President. America rests on the foundation of Law as expressed in the Constitution.
In Schiavo’s case, many courts, including the Supreme Court, have taken the same position based on relevant law.
3) Kaeini moans “Woe to a nation where a human life is valued less than ‘the letter of the law’! It is life that the law was devised to protect!”
Apparently neither medical knowledge, nor his own observations via television, have reached Kaeini. Borrowing his religious thinking: at one time Terri Schiavo occupied her body, her ‘home’, until an unexpected accident locked her in that damaged ‘home’.
Now there are no lights in that ‘home’ and Schiavo, as she was, hasn’t been outside for the past 16 years. It’s time to close down what once was.
Where is Kaeini’s voice of concern for the many, many thousands throughout America in hospitals, nursing homes, hospices or private homes suffering pain, deprivation and diminishment – wanting to die but not ‘allowed’ to because of Law – or people like him?
4) Kaeini admonishes the brothers Bush to “get there to woe-begotten Pinellas and take that woman …”
That’s vigilantism – taking the law into one’s own hands – and the brothers, Congress and the Florida legislature all have acknowledged Law is the final arbiter.
5) By Kaeini’s view, Schiavo’s death ” … will be the death in many ways, of America, at least as a truly Christian nation.” How many incidents throughout this nation’s history have brought forth this dire prophesy – yet America keeps going on.
6) He states, if Schiavo dies: “Events will follow, perhaps in quick succession, costing more innocent lives’ and, unless Schiavo is saved, it will be ” … too late for all of us.”
Perhaps, later, he’ll explain these gloom-and-doom statements that, I’m sure, have most Gilroyans locking their doors and listening nervously for footfalls in the night.
