As summer slips away, the school year looms and the Gilroy girls
are in the World Series again
Not that we’re in a rush, but it’s worth noting that school begins in two weeks. Returning Gilroy Unified School District students will flow onto school grounds beginning Thursday, Aug. 24.
Yikes, summer’s almost over. If your child has yet to finish the assigned summer work, don’t panic.
There’s still time to make a game plan, determine what needs to be done and make incremental progress for the next two weeks.
So, consider this a gentle reminder to slowly give way the lazy days of summer to the coming order and demands required by fall.
Having a prepared student mentally, and in terms of supplies and organization, can make all the difference.
A good start to the school year takes a little planning and forethought. That is well rewarded by a smooth transition for student and parent.
Meanwhile, if you’re just not ready to let go of summer, don’t fret. Immerse yourself in the wonderful story that is the Gilroy girls Little League All Star team of 11- and 12-year-olds. The Gilroy gang is making a second appearance in the Little League World Series in as many years.
The girls arrived Tuesday for team photos, a lunch and to meet the host families in Portland, Oregon. Today, there’s an opening ceremony followed by the all-important Baskin-Robbins-sponsored Ice Cream Social.
Thursday, the peanut-butter-and-chocolate ice cream gives way to serious business. Gilroy plays Morristown, Tenn., the representative from the southern United States, at 5pm on the main field at Alpenrose Park.
What a great experience for the girls to play in an international competition. Soraida Juliana Little League from Curacao represents Latin America, while the team from Layritz Little League, in Victoria, B.C. Canada represents our northern neighbors.
If Gilroy makes it into the semifinals, local fans will be able to catch them at the Claddagh, Stubby’s or Glory Days on the big screen. ESPN 2 will televise the semifinals and finals live on Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 15 and 16. Wouldn’t that make for a great “what I did on my summer vacation” essay.
