Hills celebrate 45 years

Anneliese (Mayr) and Ray Hill will celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary today. They were married on Jan. 25, 1963 in Germany. They met in a small town near Stuttgart, where Ray was stationed in the Army and Ann was a young nursery school teacher living away from her hometown of Augsburg for the first time. They fell in love, even though neither spoke the other’s language very well.

Ray and Ann settled in Gilroy in 1977 and Ray retired from the Army in 1979. They raised two daughters, Susan and Annette (Jim), and have three granddaughters, Krista, Katie and Stacey, all of whom reside in Washington state.

HONORS

Kyle Grogan

Kyle Grogan, a 2006 graduate of Gilroy High School, has been placed on the Dean’s Honors List for the Fall 2007 quarter at the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences at University of California, Irvine. He is the son of Susan Grogan and Jeff Jeske.

Miranda May

Gilroy resident Miranda May, a student at Monte Vista Christian School in Watsonville, was inducted into the International Thespian Society at a campus ceremony on Dec. 13.

Sponsored by the Educational Theatre Association, the International Thespian Society is an honorary organization for high school and middle school students who have done at least one hundred hours of excellent theatrical work in acting, direction, writing, and production. Student members are eligible for scholarships and are often recruited by colleges and universities.

Jessica Elliott

Jessica L. Elliott graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in December 2007, with a bachelor’s degree in geography and minor in music. She is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta, The National Society of Collegiate Scholars and Gamma Theta Upsilon National Geographical Honor Society. She is a 2004 graduate of Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill.

Justin Sabla

Justin Sabla, a 2005 graduate of Gilroy High School, has been promoted to aviation electronic technician Third Class United States Navy. He has also been assigned to Naval Provisional Detainee Battalion Four at Camp Bucca, Iraq. While in Iraq, Justin will be part of the forces guarding up to 30,000 Iraq detainees.

Justin spent three months training for this one-year deployment at Camp Shelby, Miss. While deployed in Iraq, his wife Cynthia will reside in Gilroy until Justin rotates to his home base at Pauxent River, Md. N.A.S. to complete his enlistment, which will end in October 2009.

Individual augmentees will bolster the ground forces the U.S. has in Iraq and other places. Currently there are more than 40,000 sailors on ground duty.

Petty officer Sabla is a member of the American Legion Gilroy Post 217 and John A. Berri Post 6309 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

ENGAGEMENT

Okada/McCabe

Stefanie Amber Okada and Christopher Charles McCabe announced their engagement on New Year’s Eve Dec. 31, 2007.

Stefanie is the daughter of David and Cindy Okada of Gilroy and granddaughter of William and Shirley Garrett of Prunedale. She is a 2002 graduate of Gilroy High School and received a bachelor’s degree in 2007 from the California College of the Arts. She currently works at Integrated Architecture in Morgan Hill.

Christopher is the son of Daniel and Cindy McCabe of Gilroy. He is a 1998 graduate of Live Oak High School. He graduated in 2004 from Gavilan College and is currently an HVAC service technician.

BIRTHS

Cole Albert Millard

Cole Albert Millard was born Dec. 21, 2007 at Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose to parents Eric and Sandie Millard of Gilroy. Cole weighed 8 pounds, 12 ounces.
