Owens celebrate 60 years

Bob and Ruth Owen will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary June 11, 2010.

They met as students at Chico State College after serving in World War II, Ruth at Pearl Harbor and Bob in the South Pacific. They spent their early years of marriage living in Northern California, where their children Daniel, Matthew and Sara were born. They settled in Morgan Hill in 1965 and taught for Morgan Hill Unified School District through the late 1980s. They have lived in Gilroy for the past 27 years.

In addition to their sons Dan, his girlfriend Kathleen, and Matt, daughter Sara and son-in-law Bill, they have four granddaughters, Jenny, Lisa, Jessica and Casey.

HONORS

Anthony Christian

Anthony Christian graduated from the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. Anthony attended the USAFA Prep School and received a bachelor’s degree four years later, on May 26, 2010. He was commissioned into the Air Force as a 2nd Lieutenant by his grandfather, retired Lt. Col. Ted Greer. His training to be a communications officer will begin in August in Buloxi, Miss. Upon completion, he will be stationed to a stateside Air Force base.

Anthony was first recognized in Gilroy as flying solo at the age of 16 out of the South County Airport in San Martin. He graduated from Gilroy High School in 2005.

Rodney Garcia

Private First Class Rodney Garcia, of Gilroy, was home on leave from May 1 through 17 from Afghanistan, where he is currently serving in the Arghandab River Valley. He was deployed to Afghanistan in August of 2009, where he has served in Lashkar, Kabul, in the Hellmand Province and Kandahar, where he serves as a airborne/infantry soldier with the 82nd Airborne Division in Operation Enduring Freedom.

Rodney is the son of Rogelio Garcia and Paula Orosco; brother of Jacqueline Cherry, Catherine Aguilar, Lori Salgado, Rogelio Garcia Jr. and brother-in-law of Laura Ortiz and sweetheart of Edlin Carranza. He is the uncle of Shantel, Richard, Johnny, Justin, Rogelio Jr., Julian, Richelle, Ryan, Shyriah and Angel.

Christopher England

Christopher England has graduated from Tulane University in New Orleans. Christopher, from Morgan Hill, earned a master’s degree.

The ceremony, held May 15, included all the pomp and circumstance of a traditional commencement but with a New Orleans twist, including bagpipes, herald trumpets and a second-line jazz procession. Music was provided by Dr. Michael White’s Original Liberty Jazz Band and jazz singer Wanda Rouzan.

ENGAGEMENTS

Stigge/Christopher

Sylvia Stigge and Jason Christopher are engaged to be married.

Sylvia, daughter of Beverly Stigge of Newton, Kan., has a bachelor’s degree in peace studies from Chapman University. She is in human resources, immigration and relocation at Dreamworks Animation.

Jason, son of Robert and Virginia Christopher of Morgan Hill, has a bachelor’s degree in film production and a minor in organizational leadership from Chapman University. He is a story and script production coordinator for Dreamworks Animation.

The wedding will be an outdoor affair near the shore of Lake Tahoe July 17, 2010. A reception will follow nearby at the Incline Village Chateau. The couple resides in Pasadena.

Lance/Barker

Joanna Ashlyn Lance and Cody Jon Barker are engaged to be married.

Joanna, daughter of Jonathan and Jan Lance, is a student at BYU studying English with a minor in editing.

Cody, son of Lloyd and Shelly Barker, is a student at UVSC studying aviation.

The couple, who live in Provo, Utah, plan an Aug. 14, 2010 wedding at the Oakland Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, with a reception that evening at the Gilroy Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Another reception will be held the following Saturday at the groom’s home in North Ogden, Utah.

Daley/Eglinton

Judy Daley, formerly of Morgan Hill, and Richard (Dick) Eglinton, of Gilroy, are engaged to be married.

Dick has three children living in Fontana and Broken Arrow, Okla. Judy has two children living in Whitefish, Mont., and Graham, N.C. Between them, they have a total of 12 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Judy is the manager and head optician at Altos Optical Company in Los Altos. Dick is the lead mechanic for CH2M Hill in Gilroy. They both look forward to retirement in a few years, together, and plan the rest of their lives viewing our beautiful country and traveling. The couple will reside in Gilroy until then.

A Sept. 4, 2010, wedding is in the planning stages. The wedding will take place in San Martin.
