SALINAS – Gilroy High’s boys basketball team came back, just not quite far enough.

Trailing Alisal 35-24 at halftime, the Mustangs came a basket away from forcing overtime in their second-round Central Coast Section playoff game in Salinas.

Tyler Hartman (25 points, 10 rebounds) converted a basket while being fouled with .4 seconds remaining, but Gilroy couldn’t get a tip-in on the intentionally missed free throw to tie, losing the game 57-55.

“I was really proud of the kids,” Gilroy coach Jeremy Dirks said. “They battled back when we were down.”

Gilroy’s Elijah Harrell had eight points, all in the second half, to go with six assists and six steals. GHS forwards Dolapo Opere and Jamie Jensen each had six points, a game after both players had pivotal performances in helping the Mustangs topple Silver Creek in the first round of CCS on Tuesday. Opere had 14 points and 13 rebounds, as Gilroy won the game by the same score as Thursday’s outcome.

The Mustangs end the season at 15-13, while Alisal (19-8) moves on to face Bellarmine (18-8) Saturday at Independence High School.
