Dear Editor,

“Do unto others as you would have them do to you.” Luke 6:31

Like most Gilroyans, we were impressed recently by actions taken at our City Council to extend the hand of friendship to those in our nation that are now suffering on the Gulf Coast. There were rightful, legal, and proper mitigations within the donation that Councilmen Paul Correa, Charles Morales, Russ Valiquette, and Roland Velasco voted to pass, ensuring that the money from the City of Gilroy that goes to the American Red Cross would reach who it was intended to and that it be used only if necessary.

It is a little confounding then why some that profess moral values now take issue on economic grounds with an act of kindness. So clearly was this action taken in faith, taken in good faith in fact by our elected leaders, and all for the benefit of our fellow Americans.

We could all do well to remember that we live on the precipice of our planet’s pivotal tectonic plates, and that our train is coming. We might as well rekinder, as four of our elected leadership just demonstrated for us all, that profiles of American courage include giving so that others might be able to give more.

Gilroy is a wealthy community on any scale. Comparing ourselves to the poorest two thirds of the world’s billions and considering the earthly goods that we just donated, perhaps we can allow ourselves to part with them?

Words are cheap.

Actions speak louder.

I am proud today of four of our elected leaders. May God bless them, and us all.

Chris Coté, Gilroy
