GHS field hockey team crushes Carmel 7-0 for second league
victory
GILROY – Seven Lady Mustang stickhandlers found the back of the net – resulting in Friday’s 7-0 shellacking of visiting Carmel.
Gilroy (7-1 overall, 2-0 in T-CAL) upped its total by one goal from an earlier 6-0 thumping of Carmel.
“We played better this time. We probably should have won by more,” head coach Adam Gemar said. “It was a great game.”
Sophomore center-midfielder Karlie Sandoval started the seven-goal surge off a redirection of a short corner. Senior wing Tracy Link – who netted a hat trick in the first win over Carmel – followed with a strike off a feed from senior Maday Garcia via teammate Selida Banuelas. Junior defender Janell Perez finished off the first-half scoring for a 3-0 halftime lead.
“She’s got excellent drives,” Gemar said. “We’ve been looking for her to score on short corners because she has a monster of a hit.”
In the second half, junior captain Elena Ramirez pushed Gilroy further ahead off an assist from Sandoval. Then Garcia got in the scoring mix as teammate Shante Mancera picked up the assist. Junior Meg Perkins, via a Link pass, scored her first goal of the year with a strong flick from the top of the circle. Senior netminder Sam Sicard tallied the final goal as she got a chance to play the field in the second half with Stephanie Glenn (one save) stepping between the pipes.
The Lady Mustangs took 27 shots on goal, while Carmel finished with only one. Gilroy also forced 14 short corners – converting on two.
Up next, Gilroy hits the road with away games against Monterey on Wednesday and RLS on Friday.
