DEAR EDITOR:

Only weeks ago the children on our street played in a quiet community amidst a serene country atmosphere. Many of the neighbors here have known each other and looked out for each other for years, some for decades. Recently “The Forum”, a sexual encounter “club”, reputed to be the leading swingers club in California and one of the top three on the West Coast, moved into our neighborhood and we are now inundated with “red light district” traffic and strangers.

“The Forum” is no small operation. They are advertised on over 40 Web sites nationwide and abroad. They say they will open their doors to 50 to 75 couples for New Year’s Eve.

People comment that we shouldn’t worry because the “members” drive nice cars and come from nice neighborhoods. Does the Forum screen for pedophiles and sex offenders? I personally know a convicted murderer and pedophile who, after he was released from jail, hosted swinger parties in his home in Atherton until he was arrested again on pedophilia and drug-related charges. After his second release he continued to drive a number of nice cars and continued to host and attend parties for swingers! I think it stands to reason that this type of operation will very likely bring a criminal element into our community.

Additionally, the Forum only allows about 20 single guys in on a given Friday night. Where do the excess number of “eager” men go? Alarmingly, according to the Forum, of those that do get in, “many single men are not successful” in their pursuit. Men who behave inappropriately are “in danger of being asked to leave.” According to the Forum, “This is the number one mistake single guys make at The Forum.”

Does the Forum just turn these “unsuccessful” and inappropriate behaving guys out into our neighborhood?!

From what I understand, Ilyas Absar of Los Altos owns the property that the Forum is renting. I doubt he would want these people driving up and down his street in Los Altos, turning around in his driveway, shining their headlights into his yard and even windows of his home as they are looking for the club and who knows what else?

Any sensible person should have realized what negative impact this kind of activity would have on a peaceful neighborhood community.

The activities that the Forum brought to our quiet neighborhood are certainly not conducive to the feeling of comfort, privacy and safety we once knew. The Forum’s operation habitually disturbs the comfort and peace of our immediate neighborhood every Friday and Saturday.

The Forum has significantly changed the atmosphere of our community for the worse and without our consent. A country neighborhood where there are many children living in very close proximity is an inappropriate place for a club like this.
