GILROY – Gilroy police have charged a 24-year-old Morgan Hill man with six felony sex charges after he took in two runaway girls from Gilroy.

After interviewing Jesus Mendez Toro and the two girls who skipped town together – one 15 years old and the other 16 – police arrested Toro on two counts each of sexual intercourse with a minor, oral copulation with a minor and unlawful penetration with a person who cannot give legal consent due to a physical, mental or developmental disability.

Toro had sex with only one of the girls, on two occasions, according to Gilroy police Detective Wes Stanford. The other girl may have had sex with a second man, said Stanford, who is still investigating.

Stanford declined to shed light on the girl’s disability or say specifically when and where the alleged sex acts occurred. The girls’ names aren’t being released because they’re juveniles.

As of Monday afternoon, Toro was being held in Santa Clara County Jail on $100,000 bail. He is expected to be arraigned Wednesday.

Parents reported the two girls missing to police at about 5 p.m. Friday. They started their search by asking acquaintances if they had seen the girls and ultimately heard the girls were staying at Toro’s apartment at 140 Ciolino Ave., Morgan Hill. They found them there at about 10 p.m. Saturday. The pair of local parents promptly escorted Toro to the Gilroy police station.

The girls had not known Toro previously, Stanford said; they met him in Gilroy after they ran away.
