Dear Editor,

I was shocked to see the article “Workers comp out of control” story in the Aug. 11 edition. I immediately assumed that the subject was workmans compensation and not the Gilroy Unified School District. Being an owner of a construction company I was surprised at the amounts of injuries incurred at GUSD.

I was surprised about this because I thought of only the teachers and administration, (How can they get hurt sitting at a desk?) and not the groundskeepers, janitors and other physical jobs that are required to keep the district running. My apologies.

I own a construction company and I am fortunate that I have had only one claim in the last five years.

We are required to hold safety meetings once a week to ensure that all employees are correctly performing tasks. Does GUSD do this?

I know that workmans comp is financially out of control but looking at the safety rating of the school district concerns me because my hard earned tax dollars are paying for this.
