Mitty in the Lions Easter Tourney Friday night, the Gilroy Mustangs
rebounded with a 6-0 win over Lynbrook on Saturday.
But it was a win with a twist.
Gilroy – After a win by forfeit Thursday and 9-1 loss to Archbishop Mitty in the Lions Easter Tourney Friday night, the Gilroy Mustangs rebounded with a 6-0 win over Lynbrook on Saturday.
But it was a win with a twist.
Gilroy High is in the process of installing a new scoreboard on the field, so to help move the project along, coach Clint Wheeler made an offer to his team.
“We rewarded a bunch of kids that came in early to help fix the field,” Wheeler said. “So the first 10 guys that showed up got to play, even if it wasn’t in their regular positions.”
For instance, junior shortstop Drew Andersen played catcher for the first time in his high school career. The plan could have really messed up the pitching situation, but Wheeler knew that wasn’t going to be a problem.
“We’ve got 10 different guys that can pitch, so I knew one of them would show up,” Wheeler said.
Junior Jeremy Teschera ended up on the mound and went four innings.
With two outs in the second inning, Gilroy senior Matt Galindo knocked a two-run double for the offensive highlight of the game.
“I saw some fire out of some guys,” Wheeler said. “We actually would have scored a few more runs, but we hit balls right at guys all day.”
Also leading the Mustangs were senior Jeff MacPhail and junior Josh Sterling, who each had two hits.
In the loss against Mitty, senior Noel DeLatorre started, going four innings and giving up six runs against a one-loss Mitty squad. Carlos Garcia pitched the fifth and sixth innings, giving up two runs and Peter Mickartz pitched the seventh, giving up one run.
“(Mitty) is a good program,” Wheeler said. “DeLatorre struggled a little bit with control.”
Mickartz (fielder’s choice) drove Sterling (single) home for the lone Gilroy run in the sixth inning.
The Mustangs now stand at 8-5 and play a Lions Easter Tourney make-up bonus-round game against Terra Nova Wednesday at 12:30pm.
