Freeth medals as GHS golf finishes 2nd in tri-match
SALINAS – Sophomore Stephen Freeth shot a team-low 36 over nine holes to medal in the Gilroy High boys golf team’s T-CAL tri-match with Salinas and Live Oak at Corral de Tierra CC.

The Mustang duffers finished second as a team with a 206 combined score, five strokes behind the host Cowboys (201), but 32 strokes stronger than the Acorns (238).

“It was a beautiful day in the Carmel Valley and the course was in excellent shape. The greens were some of smoothest we’ve seen all year,” said head coach Eric Kuwada of the par-36 course in Salinas that is set in a valley with oaks, pine trees and other wildlife. “It’s a country club, so the conditioning and facilities are always pristine. It’s a real privilege for the guys to see a great golf course.”

Senior Ryan Dinsmore was two strokes off Freeth’s medal pace, shooting a 38, while senior Thomas Hoshida finished strong with a 41. Rounding out the Gilroy line-up were: senior Daniel Perry (45), freshman Jordan Miller (46) and sophomore Jami Binowski (46).

“We played well. We kept up with Salinas. Palma, Salinas and us seem to be fighting it out. We need to beat Salinas today to help our cause,” Kuwada said. “The last two weeks are looking more omnious than ever. We are right where we need to be. We have to take advantage of the play and the course knowledge to beat these other eams.”
