Spanking Quite Different Than Hitting – What Will We Try to Legislate Next?
Dear Editor,
In response to Jordan Riak of Alamo who thinks Assemblywoman Sally Lieber’s anti-spanking bill is a good idea – you’ve got to be kidding. First of all, Ms. Lieber has never had children so who is she to propose laws for those of us with the responsibility of raising the next generation? My guess is that Jordan Riak doesn’t have children either.
Second of all, spanking is not the same as hitting. Spanking is done under controlled circumstances as a means of discipline, not lashing out in anger. Hitting children is already a crime, it’s called child abuse. For goodness sake, let’s use common sense and not legislate every move we make.
If we’re not careful, pretty soon all of our freedom will be legislated away. Just the fact that someone would seriously consider such a law is a warning sign.

Blaming the City for Tragic Accident Simply a Matter of ‘Deep Pockets’ Reality
Dear Editor,
What I can’t understand is why do we have to assume it’s the city of Gilroy’s fault? The worst traveled streets? Sounds to me that the one that should be liable is the person behind the wheel. She has the responsibility of being behind the wheel, good and bad. Just because there was a tragic accident, we have to find fault with the city. The city doesn’t provide sufficient signs, not enough traffic officers, not enough this or that. We as humans tend to find the bigger pockets to blame. As someone wrote, nothing will bring back our children.
I drive these streets everyday. I’m always on the lookout for people obeying and not obeying laws. It’s my responsibility to look out for the other guy, whether they’re in or out of a crosswalk. I’m the one in the car, I’m the one protected. Yes, we have traffic lights and crosswalks, but isn’t it the driver’s responsibility to be careful and not take a green light for granted? Just because it’s green, doesn’t mean we have a free pass to go, and if someone is in our way it’s their fault or in this case the city’s fault.
Because of the tie-ups with insurance companies, and such, the better, quicker solution is to go after the one with the BIG pockets? If money isn’t going to bring anyone back, why not leave it back on the driver who didn’t yield to a pedestrian?

Children Should Not Be Crossing Busy Streets Without Adult Supervision
Dear Editor,
I believe that the Trejo family are as guilty as the driver of the vehicle that killed Brayan. Why were these kids crossing a busy street without adult supervision?
A responsible parent does not allow such a thing, so stop the ridiculous lawsuit. The city of Gilroy had nothing to do with your carelessness and now you are trying capitalize from your loss. Shame on you.
