In perhaps the biggest game of the year so far for the San Benito boys basketball team, Jacob Tonascia had his best game on the offensive end in his three-year varsity career.

Just as the raindrops fell across the Christopher High softball diamond, senior Kayla Medrano sprinkled in the game-winning hit in the bottom of the ninth inning of a 1-0 victory over North Monterey County on Tuesday.

Senior Mariah Martinez and junior Kristen Dennis had three hits apiece, senior Aly Olvera struck out five, and the Christopher High softball team posted a 7-1 victory over visiting Sobrato in the Cougars' home debut Wednesday in Gilroy.

GILROY—Armando Padilla overlooked his team practicing and he shook his head, smiling at the thought of the upcoming season. 

GILROY — Brandon Boyd is the type of athlete that coaches dream of having. He’s hardworking, talented, modest and intelligent. He’s the kind of player who a team will rally around, but doesn’t think the team revolves around him. Week after week, he made him team, friends and family proud — especially his dad Brian Boyd, who got the rare opportunity to stand on the sidelines and soak it all in.

Gilroy fell in a tie breaker to Monte Vista Christian on Wednesday, with MVC taking the match thanks to the score of its sixth player.

For the duration of the season, a must-win situation will present itself every time the Gilroy High baseball team takes the field. A rocky start to the year has presented the Mustangs with no other choice but to look up and leave nothing behind.
