Gavilan Football: Rams best Lobos in home finale

GILROY—The Golden Coast League portion of Gavilan’s 2014 football experience ended on a high note Saturday night as the Rams raced past the Monterey Peninsula College Lobos 45-41 at the Garcia-Elder Sports Complex.

WATSONVILLE—Gilroy had a couple goals in mind heading into Friday’s game with Pajaro Valley. The Mustangs obviously wanted to record a win, but they also wanted to ensure they established momentum for next week’s Severance Bowl.

Prep Field Hockey: Seniors shine in regular season finale

GILROY—Thursday’s game against Presentation was bittersweet for Gilroy’s four seniors. While the 9-1 win over the Panthers was exactly the ending they hoped for, the graduating Mustangs were still in disbelief that they had played their final game at the Garcia-Elder Sports Complex.

Erin was our lone victor this week, drawing a 10-2 pick. She was followed closely by Emanuel and Cheeto, who both went 9-3. Nathan and Scott also had a good week, going 8-4 in their picks.

Each week we will recognize one area male and female athlete for their performances. This week's are:

JUCO Basketball: Women embrace underdog mentality

Last year was rough for the Gavilan women’s basketball team. An already small team—the roster maxed out at 11 players—was reduced to only five or six players at one point thanks to injuries. Those remaining struggled on the court and their record reflected it as the Rams finished 3-22 overall last year. The year before wasn’t any easier and Gavilan finished the season with a 1-24 mark.

Prep Wrestling: Varela, Mustangs honored by City

GILROY—The Gilroy High wrestling program has a storied history of excellence, producing several California Interscholastic Federation state and Central Coast Section champions. The walls of the Bob Hagen gym are decorated with its multiple CCS team titles—the Mustangs have won 12 straight—and on Monday night, Gilroy added another honor to its collection: a proclamation from the City of Gilroy.
