Morgan Hill – A downtown convenience and liquor store was robbed at gunpoint. No one was injured in the incident.

The male suspect entered Simple Beverages, at 17290 Monterey Road, just after 9pm Tuesday wearing a yellow, black and white hockey jersey, long jean shorts and white socks pulled up to his knees with white shoes, according to Morgan Hill police Cmdr. David Swing. He was also wearing white gloves and a white mask.

The suspect pointed a silver and black handgun at owner John Kim, who was behind the counter, then put the gun back into a pocket and demanded money, police said.

Kim handed over two black bags containing money, Swing said, and the suspect took off running out of the store and eastbound on East Third Street in the direction of Depot Street and the railroad tracks.

Police are not releasing the amount of money contained in the bags.

Kim followed the suspect from the store and watched him run across the railroad tracks east of Depot Street then returned to the store and called police, Swing said.

Kim said Wednesday afternoon that he did not want to comment on the incident.

There were no customers in the store at the time of the robbery, but a man who sometimes helps Kim when he is busy was in the store with Kim.

The robbery was caught on the store’s surveillance camera, which also assisted in locating a suspect in a recent robbery outside the store.

The suspect is described as possibly Hispanic, 20 to 25 years old, 5-feet, 7-inches weighing about 175 pounds.

Swing said the department is investigating several leads related to the robbery.
