Gilroy – It’s another first for the Gilroy Planet Fitness weightlifters.

In her first weightlifting competition, Gilroy’s Tina Riley set a new state and national record in the bench press en route to winning the women’s division at the One–on–One World Fitness competition in San Mateo last month.

Riley benched 200 lbs., beating out the second place competitor by 20 lbs.

“For me, I was actually aiming for 225 because that’s what I’d been doing in the gym. But I pinched a nerve (in my shoulder) the day before,” Riley said.

“I was very happy. It was a good feeling and I really enjoyed it.”

Riley will compete again in Sacramento in June.

Despite the fact that it was her first competition, Riley said nerves didn’t negatively affect her. Instead, her experience made her want to compete again and get other women to do the same.

“I really want to encourage other women to get involved in powerlifting because it’s not just a man’s sport,” Riley said. “It’s really growing and it’s starting to grow with women involved.”
