Gilroy – Thousands of youngsters, teens and adults are expected to participate in the annual Summer Reading Club at the Gilroy Library, which this year focuses on mystery themes, one of the most popular genres of literature.

The program kicks off Saturday, June 2.

This year’s theme for children entering grades K-8 in the fall is “Get a Clue @ the Library.” Children can sign up for the club in June and receive a reading log to keep track of books they read during the summer months.

They may read any type or size of book they want – fiction, nonfiction, or graphic novels. Participants who finish will receive a prize and reading certificate.

Research has shown that children who read during summer vacation are more likely to retain the skills learned during the school year, according to Community Librarian Lani Yoshimura.

“This is a popular program every year,” she said. “Parents like it that their children are keeping reading skills fresh and the children enjoy having something fun to do during summer vacation.”

There also is a mystery-themed Summer Reading Club for teens entering grades 7 and up in the fall – “YNK [You Never Know] @ Your Library.”

Each teen who signs up will receive a bookmark, mood pencil, reading log and a booklist of recommended books.

Adults too can keep a summer reading log and enjoy special programs related to the “It’s A Mystery” theme.
