Dear Editor,
I was delighted to read Supervisor Don Gage’s op-ed piece (Why County Sales Tax Measure Deserves Your Yes Vote). I’m right with him. I support Measure A because, as a environmentalist, I think we need to invest in our existing communities to make them attractive places to live so that people aren’t constantly moving out to “greener pastures.”
Affordable housing and good public transit are crucial to maintaining our quality of life in Santa Clara County, and preventing sprawl elsewhere. Since Measure A is a general tax, it doesn’t require the county to spend the money for these purposes. But the Board of Supervisors has a strong track record of investing in public transit and affordable housing.
They know it’s critical that we keep the Valley Medical Center open as well as ensure that people have a means of getting to their appointments there. They know that it’s essential that children in low-income families have basic health insurance as well as a safe, permanent place to sleep at night. Measure A can help the county provide the kind of services and transportation improvements we all expect and deserve.
