DEAR EDITOR:
Thank you Gilroy for your generosity. We had secretly hoped against hope that we might be able to gather 500 books to give to homeless and poor children in Gilroy as part of St. Joseph’s Christmas Sharing program. Almost 3,000 books were donated!!! Over 600 children had their choice of books to take home – special treats such as “Goodnight Moon,” Nancy Drew mysteries and the Grinch Who Stole Christmas (in both English and Spanish). We don’t know the names of the hundreds of generous souls who brought in treasured favorites so that a child could know the joy of books but we want to thank you. I wish you could’ve seen the smiles as children held their books tight.
A special thanks goes to ElephantBooks.com for its donation of 1,500 books and the Second Harvest Food Bank for its gift of so very many books. Gilroy Foods employees pooled their checks so that we could buy Spanish language books especially for Spanish speaking parents so that they might read to their children. A special donor personally bought and delivered 90 books in Spanish. Perhaps the most heartwarming was the response of the Sunday School children at Gilroy Presbyterian Church who completely filled a large car with their gifts. And our thanks to the folks at Garlic City Coffee and Tea, City Hall and the Gilroy Library who not only raided their personal bookshelves for donations but who provided collection boxes. We know the people of Gilroy are generous and kind. Once again Gilroy you have proven it. Thank you.
