Three lauded for their contributions to the arts
Gilroy – Advocates working to strengthen the local arts scene were honored Thursday night by the Theater Angels Art League.
The ceremony drew nearly 50 people to the Willey Cultural Center to recognize volunteers Al Navaroli and Deborah George and the Gilroy Foundation.
“We are looking for people who make a significant contribution to the development of our arts community during the last year,” said Arline Silva, spokesperson for the art league.
Navaroli has spent years helping recruit musicians for the South Valley Symphony Orchestra.
“South Valley Symphony is sounding better every year, largely through his efforts,” Silva said.
Deborah George, a parent volunteer, has breathed new life into the Arts Alive program at Eliot Elementary School.
Donna Pray, executive director of the Gilroy Foundation, accepted an award on behalf of the group for its efforts to finance and help organize a new arts alliance.
The group has 50 members but is still in its infancy, according to Silva, who said arts advocates hope to strengthen the new alliance in time for the opening of a new Gilroy arts center in 2008.
