Gilroy – PETCO is launching a new “Think Adoption First” initiative Saturday with a National Pet Adoption Weekend. Friends of the San Martin Animal Shelter will provide plenty of furry creatures for adoption at PETCO in Gilroy and Morgan Hill from noon to 4pm.
“Think Adoption First is the right thing to do, and we are absolutely committed to making this work, to the benefit of adoptable animals and our community animal welfare partners,” said James Myers, PETCO chief executive officer.
PETCO in Gilroy has a Petfinder center in the store, which allows visitors searching for new pets to find photos and bios of cats and dogs available at local shelters.
The PETCO branches in Morgan Hill and Gilroy have long been supportive of FOSMAS, allowing the group to set up pet fairs on weekends two or more times a month.
The most recent pet fair in Gilroy, held last weekend found a home for one 3-month-old orange tabby named Tanner. The group ended up even when they replaced him with a 3-week-old black kitten found and turned in by a PETCO employee. Rick Confer, a FOSMAS volunteer, agreed to take the kitten, dubbed Jamba, home with him where he and his wife Barb Crowell will hand feed him. Confer and his wife are currently fostering 22 cats and kittens.
Pets are available all week long for adoption at the San Martin Animal Shelter. Call 683-4186 or visit www.fosmas.org for more information. The animal shelter is located at 12370 Murphy Ave. in San Martin.
