Costa cements Mustang baseball’s 9-4 win
SALINAS – The Gilroy High baseball team extended its winning streak to three games with Thursday’s 9-4 road victory over North Salinas.

Seldom-used reserve Kyle Costa cemented the Mustangs’ win with a double and two RBIs in the seventh inning to give Gilroy some insurance going into North Salinas’ final at-bats.

Sophomore starter Peter Mickartz pitched five strong innings for the win – striking out three and walking three. Senior left-hander Todd Gimenez closed out the game for a save – striking out three in the final two frames.

The Gilroy bats stayed hot as senior outfielder John Kirkish went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in; sophomore shortstop Jordan Newton finished 2-for-4; Gimenez went 1-for-3 with a walk and RBI; junior third baseman Ben Hemeon was 1-for-4; and freshman catcher Chris Hernandez went 1-for-4.

The Mustangs (5-8 in T-CAL, 8-16 overall) will host Hollister on Saturday at 1 p.m. as part of a rain make-up game. Then, neighboring rival Live Oak comes to town May 13 at 4 p.m. for the final game of the season.
